Oh, Jean-Claude Van Damme. Why did you turn it down? Tut tut tut.
Want this. Want this now.

Let’s get this out of the way first: the trailer for Scott Pilgrim vs The World is simply one of the best trailers I’ve seen for a very long time. Observe:
Stunning.
However, I think this film will represent something else. A truly amazing videogame film.
I know, it’s based on a comic. It is and it will be possibly be the joint best comic film of the year. But within that film and the comics beats the heart of a 16bit computer game warrior.
You can see it in the pixelated laser sword. The way defeated enemies explode into coins. The announcer screaming KO! at the end of a fight.
This is a film made for and by someone who grew up on videogames. Who doesn’t know a world without videogames.
You see, someone once said that videogames are only going to be treated with respect once all the old people die. This is where it starts. This is a glimpse of a world without people in movies or on TV randomly pressing buttons on an upside down controller.
God bless you Scott Pilgrim.

Oscars were interesting this year.
Having the Hurt Locker win marks a major change for the academy. Moving away from the giving the award to the big box office films is something that people have been asking for since…well, as far as I can remember. The worst example of this is when Pulp Fiction lost to Forest Gump. This was a very similar battle to what we had last night. Only this time, the small edgy film won. Shocking.
This isn’t to say that Hurt Locker doesn’t deserve it, it is a very very good film. It totally deserves to win. Avatar won the awards that it deserves to win; art direction and visual effects. This is unarguable. Avatar is the best looking film ever made. The depth to the world that Cameron created is stunning. It is an almighty achievement.
He just forgot to bring the test of the film along with it.

Clash of The Titans, Iron Man, Kick Ass, Repo Men, Scott Pilgrim, The A-Team, The Expendables, The Losers, Toy Story 3, Tron Legacy, Upcoming
Right, no flim flam or messing about, here are the films I’m looking forward to this year:
Tron Legacy because, dammit, it looks stunning.
The A-Team because it simply has to be good otherwise I’ll cry.
The Losers because if The A-Team isn’t good I’ll still have this as a backup.
Toy Story 3 because Pixar haven’t let me down yet.
Iron Man 2 because even if it’s half as good as the first film it will still be amazing.
The Expendables just for the cast, the Harlem Globetrotters of balls to the wall action films.
Repo Men for no real reason despite the original title being much much better.
Clash of The Titans just to see an Unleashed Kraken.
Kick Ass because it looks like it will.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World just because of this:

Nostalgia can be a tricky thing. It’s hard to judge the things you loved as a child as an adult. Was the ThunderCats cartoon really that good? How can anyone listen to MC Hammer?
